SLOW TRAIN TO AUSTIN
PART I: ZION

WE lost our jobs during Covid and grew restless in the city. I imagined this part of the trip, LA to Austin, alone. Some sort of isolated desert magic. But the desert has no shortage of medicine. When you fall to your knees it will engulf you and spit you out somewhere new. Datura bloomed along the moonlit roads and her sweet exhale became a sort of soundtrack to our rebirth process. Ancient elders, our fingers in the soft pink clay earth. Arguments over things I don’t remember, tears in moments I won’t soon forget. The kind of laughter that turns walls into water, crashing and weaving back into the ocean we left behind. Reminding me that the most precious moments in life are shared.
This was the start of our journey.
